Police arrested, arraigns three for stealing meter, assault

The police have arraigned three men, Ekong Ekwere, Iniobong Abraham and Kazeem Otapo, before the Ogun State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Agbara for alleged electricity meter bypass, theft and assault on employees of the Eko Electricity Distribution Company.

The defendants were arraigned before Magistrate B.O. Ilo on five counts bordering on felony, stealing, breach of the peace and assault.

It was gathered that the defendants allegedly stole a prepaid meter valued at N739,350.92 and Ekwere illegally received electricity units valued at N301,000, while Otapo reportedly assaulted two employees of the EKEDC while they were performing their lawful duties.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The magistrate admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety each in like sum.

He ordered that the defendants should be remanded in the Ibara Correctional Centre pending the perfection of their bail terms and adjourned the matter till July 7 for trial.

The General Manager, Corporate Communications, EKEDC, Godwin Idemudia, in a statement on Thursday, urged the firm’s customers to refrain from energy theft and assault on its employees.

Idemudia, who lamented the alarming rate of energy theft and violence against its workers, reiterated the EKEDC’s zero-tolerance for crime.

He said, “I want to advise the public against energy theft, meter bypass and assault against the EKEDC staff as the company will go the full length to seek justice against these acts.

“I also want to assure all staff members of the EKEDC of their safety while performing their lawful duties as measures are in place to curb such acts.”
